Cant read (paywall), but we just went through apartment hunting with my mother, who is selling her house. What we saw is that the rental market here is pretty soft--nice apartments in good locations that aren't egregiously overpriced are going fast, but anything not grade A choice is languishing. The research budget cuts, hiring freezes, drops in arrivals from international students, etc, are clearly taking a toll. The people who would be coming in to take those apartments are not coming in. So now: buying is way more expensive than renting. We saw a condo for rent right next door to a condo for sale--nearly identical units--and the cost to own was probably double the cost to rent.
