Show HN: Gojju, a Fun Programming Language

https://hemanth.github.io/gojju/
13•init0•1mo ago
Hey HN! I built Gojju, a programming language that cherry-picks my favorite features from 5 languages:

- Python: List comprehensions, slicing

- Ruby: #{interpolation}, postfix if, blocks

- Haskell: |> pipe operator, lambdas \x -> x+1, Maybe/Either

- Perl: unless/until, regex literals

- JavaScript: Arrow functions =>, spread ...

Example:

  [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
    |> filter(\x -> x % 2 == 0)
    |> map(\x -> x * 2)
    |> sum
Install: `pip install gojju`

The name "Gojju" (ಗೊಜ್ಜು) means "essence" or "secret ingredient" in Kannada.

Would love feedback on the syntax choices!

I'm not a programmer, but I like this. It's very easy to use. I can even use gojju on the shebang when writing scripts. I'm a fan. I could package this for ArchLinux User Repository (AUR).

In the long run it would probably nice with a switch or an environment variable to make the banner less intrusive.

The license file seems to be missing.

Hello, interesting choices in the syntax. I always wanted python with the possibility of writing it with functional concepts. And that's very nice.

It's purely personal, by reading "Features at a glance" there is the interpolation of Ruby that I really don't like, I prefer by far the f-strings of python. And I don't think I'll be using unless and until that much (aren't they also Ruby ?). Again that's just IMHO.

If I had more skills in writing parsers and tokenizers, that's probably a project I'd do.

Nice job !

Also another syntax feature I like from Haskell and also Nim is a possibility to call a function with 0 or 1 arg without parentheses.

Funny, because "Gochu" is chili in Korean, I never thought it originated from foreign word.
