The attrition is setting in: how Oregon's magic mushroom experiment lost its way

Interesting look into Oregon’s (of all places) medical mushroom landscape.

The experiment was doomed by the regulation from day one.

Producers must be on land zoned agricultural (this is actually worse for mushroom cultivation) The fees are egregious (compare $5,000 /yr with the $50 / yr for a beer brewer’s license) breweries spring up everywhere in Oregon, high quality low price, great diversity healthy production ecosystem.

I’m sure there were other restrictions but those stand out as the top 2.

This locks production in at a high price with well funded producers. And requires high prices and high volume (for no benefit) It destroys any ability for grass roots cottage industry producers (who often have excellent quality control and testing capabilities)

I could have written this article years ago before the evidence rolled in simply on the basis of the rules as written ( I actually said almost these exact words when I saw the rules: “this will fail because it creates an onerous burden on producers and prevents a healthy and sustainable production ecosystem”)

Which is a shame because evidence continues to mount that psychedelics assisted therapy is extraordinarily effective.
