I built NewsMap, a mobile app that aggregates SF/Bay Area news and displays stories on an interactive map at precise locations.

I always wanted this to exist and finally used AI to build it.

I'm using an LLM to extract locations from article text, then verify and geocode them with Google Places. The app currently processes over a thousand articles/day from 40+ sources and is focused on the Bay Area for testing, although expanding to other metro areas would be relatively straightforward now.

Have you seen any similar examples of using LLMs for geospatial extraction and visualization? I've only seen extremely broad mapping like to specific cities before, which never felt specific/relevant enough to me. I would hope to see more applications like this in the near future, though.
