How does UI automation work? does it work on mobile? Hoping to use something like this for mobile QA

Not sure about how the automation works but it's just a desktop VM, so you can spin up an Android emulator or iOS simulator and test your app that way. If you want actual mobile dev units, you can use services like BrowserStack, Testmu, or even AWS' own Device Farm.
