10GbE in 2026 Is Finally Hitting the Tipping Point

The article doesn't mention it but 10GBASE-T came out in 2006! And 20 years later we are only just reaching the tipping point.

I remember getting the 1Gbps in early 2000s and knowing 10Gbps approved but not yet for copper twisted pair cables I thought by late 2000s or early 2010s I should be upgrading again.

Cost never came down, you either pay huge premium for 10Gbps or you get 1Gbps x2 which is enough for most Home NAS.

And then in 2016, 10 years after the introduction of 10GBASE-T they decided to introduce 2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T. We would have thought they will quickly fill the gap given that WiFi has a clear roadmap of Total throughput exceed 1Gbps and even 2.5Gbps. Didn't happen, some vendor choose 2.5Gbps but 5Gbps was largely ignored, those that support 5Gbps were actually newer 10Gbps Ethernet controller.

Finally 2026 we have Realtek, 10Gbps is finally affordable and will only get cheaper over time.
