Show HN: VNOL – The Vendor-Neutral Cognitive OS Layer for Agent Portability

1•grrajan•1w ago
Hey HN,

I’ve been obsessed with the idea that while LLMs are becoming commodities, Agent State is becoming the new vendor lock-in.

Currently, if you build an agent in LangChain, its "mind" (history, intent-graph, learned synapses) is trapped there. If you want to move that same cognitive session from GPT-4 to Claude 3.5, or from one framework to another, you’ve basically got to start from scratch or deal with massive context loss.

I built VNOL (Vendor-Neutral Orchestration Layer) to solve this at the kernel level.

What it is: VNOL is a "Cognitive OS" layer. It treats an agentic session like a process that can be snapshotted, serialized (VNOL v2.0 YAML spec), and rehydrated on any model or framework.

Key Technical Hooks:

Pre-Disk Intent Locking: We intercept agent actions (file writes, API calls) before they hit the system, with a 12ms latency budget (using Azhwar, a hybrid Regex/AST engine). Mind Portability: Decouples the reasoning skeleton from the model. You can "pause" a session on OpenAI and "resume" it on Anthropic with full intent continuity. Inhibitory Synapses: A self-healing mechanism that injects negative-weight synapses into the agent's memory graph after a failure, preventing deterministic loop failures. Canonical Cognitive Sealing: Every snapshot is sealed with an HMAC signature to ensure that the agent's identity and constraints aren't tampered with during transfer.

Why I built this: I’m running a "1.1 Person Startup." I use VNOL to manage a swarm of 20 autonomous agents that code and audit each other. Without a standardized way to move their states and secure their actions, the overhead of managing them was becoming a full-time job.

The Tech Stack:

TypeScript (Kernel) YAML (Snapshot Spec) Azhwar (AST-based Governance) Sentrix (Security Interception)

I’d love to hear your thoughts on "Mind Portability." Is the industry moving toward a standardized agent state, or are we destined for cognitive silos?
