So many em dashes... and on the default vibe gradient too.

Reads like AI, very long, maybe I’ll have my AI summarize your AI.
mikeocool•1h ago
No, but they care about how quickly new features can be added and how frequently bugs pop up. And clean code still impacts both of those, even in when AI writes the code (or writes articles like this).

I feel like this article is arguing against a strawman.

No one cares about your blog, either.

This cynicism is extremely extremely true from the organizations perspective. Organizations are awful about caring, and drastically worse still about assessing.

It's feel and vibes anyways. I sympathize so much for how unseeing how incapable how useless organizations are about the codebases that they don't understand. There's such unclarity, such lack of authority, such vibe.

But it's still just totally incredibly wrong hearted & narrow a view. What we do today constantly shapes our options tomorrow. We coders are engineering a Le Guin Lathe of the Heavens, are shaping and refining constantly all futures to come.

AI is both an argument for and against this. Engineering is incuring some constant context poisoning as it works, making choices that seal off other futures, send us in one course. And usually there would be some better decisions that would better steer us towards a broader future. We are making human context poisoning, are creating path dependency constantly.

AI also gives us more chance to just redo the world, to remake bigly, to not abide by the past & present it sent us into. But so too, AI will see what we have & steering it to different takes hard work, to u poison the AI.

This kind of mercenary shit is just all over. The outcome is what matters feels like this constant caltrop that is everywhere. I recognize that yes, it's not just about craftsmanship either, that outcomes matter. But the craft is there to better consider futures, is the sensibility and taste we use to leave futures open, to make systems that are malleable & pliant & can go on and on. That are cohesive & reason-able.

This shit is a fucking mental plague by the smallest minded, and it's so hard to imagine what or how corporatism can be better than this. Because it's so intangible but so real, because the craft is so crucial. Programmers and the peers they go to, how as a group they find and make taste, is so much more livelt and interesting than the org chart, with such attractors all for reason and charisma and office politic. The programmers intuitively get that they want to make good systems, and doing so is the interesting & fruitful art, more than throwing the shit on the page, which now the AI can do anyways.
