It took a bit of time to get used to this in our first car that has it. As an engineer, I hope they made the (completely ordinary ring and pinion) starter system to last the distance and not wear out prematurely from 10-100x as many starting cycles. As a driver, merely had to get used to allowing about 1/2 second after getting off the brake to expecting engine power. At least in this car (a Honda) if you even lightly let up on brake pedal pressure after the engine has been shut off, it restarts, and stays running for the rest of the stop.
