Hello everyone! It’s my first time posting, and not sure if this is the right place, as it’s fiction. But I enjoyed writing this, and I suspect if anyone would enjoy reading it, those people are likely to be here. Like many of us I grew up on Asimov and Bradbury, and later Borges and Hofstader, to which this owes obvious debt. Inspired by GEB’s tactic of placing abstract ideas in fantastical space, I wrote a narrative reflection on our current moment, whose boundary to science fiction no longer feels distinct.

How much of this was written with a language model?

None. I dictated several passages and transcribed with AI for convenience, though it was mainly typed by hand. I ran my final draft through Claude to catch spelling mistakes and unintentional repetition. Em dashes are my own :)
