I think this is the 1000th dupe post of this, but something I haven't seen mentioned on HN of all places is that I believe OpenAI gates their API access for any serious model behind the exact same company: Persona. So lots of HN users will already have shared their identity data with them.

Notably still the only AI provider that demands this kind of check.

Right, the plan is to eventually use it as a launch point for worldcoin.

If you don’t have an orb, it links you to the orb shop. You buy it with money, but registering your face gives you an equivalent number of worldcoin tokens and access to chatgpt (or some elite version of it). They will offer it as a more “privacy conscientious” option to persona, eventually replacing it and making it mandatory within 5 - 10 years.
