Goes to show what happens when we let politicians on charge of anything — worse still, geriatric politicians who wouldn't recognize a operating system if it bit them. I assume they will outlaw open source OSes or custom kernels next? I'd say that arresting the island man's entourage would do more for child's safety than any further stupidity those absolute nincompoops choose to insult our intelligence with next, except for the fact that they know and such absurdities are sleights of hand to avoid doing just that.

I assume that the consequences of OS-level age verification, or DRM or even "golden key" encryption backdoors will be to ban open source operating systems. That would be killing the goose that lays the golden eggs, wouldn't it? Virtually all recent system-level advances were made in open source operating systems.

Trying to grasp is like playing some sort of malice–stupidity 5D chess. Do they realize such a ban would be unenforceable? Even if it were, would they really strive inflict something like Windows Server as the sole foundation of the Internet as a whole? Do they realize that if their wildest surveillance wet dreams came true, everything got the perfect backdoor, the perfect backdoor would be just as perfect for any of their enemies who managed to wield it? If they do realize, do they care? Again, they're not just dinosaurs or politicians, they're both, so who knows.
