Here’s the situation: I’m in my mid-30s, never really had the chance to study or go to college. In September last year I enrolled in an undergraduate degree, which can eventually lead to a bachelors, in coding/programming.
Reading HN, I see nothing but talk of doomsday, doing something entirely different, total abandonment of writing and engineering code.
Obviously this is somewhat worrying to me, on the other hand: would you really not advise anyone to learn how to code these days?
I must admit I don’t have any dreams of becoming a software developer; and a big part of me doing these classes is to learn a new skill I’m interested in (with the hopefully added bonus of some extra financial gain in the future).
So I wonder: would you discourage anyone to head into coding in this day and age?

I guess it depends if you’re interested in the skill of software development and earning money, or if you don’t have any dreams of becoming a software developer. You’ve suggested that both are true, so I’m not sure what to say.
If this is a skill that you’re interested in, then I would argue you should follow your interest regardless. Having something you’re interested in as a motivational factor is always helpful in my opinion.
On the other hand, if you’re not interested in the skill of software development and you’re just in it for the money, then I would urge you to find something you are more interested in. AI or no AI if you’re not interested in software development, you’ll probably be a bad software developer and you probably won’t enjoy it as much as you would something you’re interested in.
