Show HN: I built an app that turns trending news into a commute podcast

https://staging.newswise.news
1•appfactory•1h ago
Hi HN,

I’m the solo developer behind News Wise.

I built this primarily to scratch my own itch. I found myself wasting way too much time every morning doom-scrolling across five different sites just to check local weather, look up last night's sports scores, and read the major headlines before I had to drive to work.

I wanted everything on one fast, lightweight dashboard, but more importantly, I wanted a way to consume it safely while in the car.

What it does:

Aggregates the top 15 trending stories across 6 categories (World, Tech, Business, Science, Entertainment, etc.) and updates them every 4 hours.

Pulls hyper-local weather based on your coordinates.

Tracks live-ish sports scores, standings, and rosters (updated every 10 mins) without the bloat of major sports networks.

The Daily Commute: This is the core feature. It takes the top 7 summarized stories, passes them through AI, and generates an audio file you can play directly from your browser while driving.

The Stack: It's an Angular frontend communicating with a Node.js/Express backend, hooked up to a PostgreSQL database, and deployed on a Digital Ocean droplet using Nginx as a reverse proxy.

The Ask: I’m currently in a beta testing phase and trying to stress-test the backend architecture. I've set up a 14-day free trial so you can bypass the paywall entirely and test it out.

I’d love some brutal, honest feedback on:

The naturalness of the AI audio generation for the "Daily Commute" feature.

The UI layout for the sports data—does it feel clean enough compared to the major sports apps?

Any edge-case bugs you find with the geolocation weather fetching.

Thanks for checking it out, and I'll be hanging around the comments all day to answer any questions!

Super interesting Wikipedia on HN. So I made wiki-hn.
