Ask HN: Are there any merchant of records that don't dox you?

3•movamplery•1h ago
I am making a website and I want to start charging $5 a month for a subscription but I do not want my users to be able to trivially find my full name and street address from a quick online search (basic privacy desire).

I know if you form an LLC then people can just easily find your full name and street address from required annual state reports (even if you register in "private" states like Wyoming since you need to also register in your home state if that is your center of operations), so I don't want to do that.

Similarly, if you register a "Doing Business As" name and just use Stripe normally, then someone can just take 5 seconds and search your DBA and find out your full name and street address since you have to register it with your state.

Merchants of record like Paddle and Stripe Managed Payments seem potentially useful here since users on their credit card statements will just see the merchant instead of your DBA or legal name, but it seems like Stripe also requires you to publicly disclose a street address, contact phone number, etc.

What about other services like Paddle, Dodo Payments, etc.? Are there any that I can use where I don't immediately dox myself? I don't care if Stripe, Paddle, my Bank, the government, etc. have my personal information but I obviously don't want any random user to just instantly find out where I live and show up at my house.

I know this sort of thing is possible because Patreon for example says in their docs that that you can keep your full legal name and street address hidden from patrons. So this sort of thing is possible but I rather use an actual merchant of record instead of something like Patreon. I can't believe how impossible it is to find this information online. I did like an hour of research on Paddle and it is still not clear to me if you can be anonymous to your users or not, whereas Patreon makes it extremely clear.

i'd argue that you're shooting yourself in the foot with your requirements. A merchant going way out of their way to avoid being found is a huge red flag for any conscientious buyer.

I'm selling an optional monthly subscription for a completely virtual product that they can cancel at any time. Why do they need to know my full legal name, personal phone number, and home street address for this? Plenty of people on Patreon are anonymous to their audience. Am I really going to have to use Patreon for this? It seems pretty ridiculous but they do have web hook support so it's not impossible, but obviously a proper Merchant of Record would be a much more suitable fit
