Goodbye, Apple Photos

Long ago, I wanted to export "iphotos" to external disk. I sneakernet a lot. They were all in a tree structure by date. Thanks to Unix, one command got them all. I keep all photos as files. "Read the SD card, Luke". It gets a bit tedious with a bunch of cameras, and I might turn on bluetooth one of these days.

Here's the rub. Apple photos, any camera photos, are wildly anonymous. Any useful info is buried in the EXIF data. The "search" function in ios is great comedy. I REALLY could use any kind of image recognition to help find and sort. Of course, somewhat accurate, not hosted at the Pichai Spy Agency, and free.

Files bring smiles, while apps are traps.

And FWIW, my nice cameras make really great jpegs, so nice that I rarely need to go past the Preview.app (I used "xv" for ages. RIP John Bradley)[0] and now and then GIMP. And despite having the Nikon suite, which I keep at an earlier version to avoid having to create a damn account there, as well as awesome RawTherapee and DarkTable software. Comparison. [1] What I get is better than the "80% rule" [2]

For now, anyway. Digital photo collection goes WAY back, and scans even more. I am trying out snapping old slides with the 45 Mpix Nikon rather than buy a new scanner, some $800 or more.
