The subtitle gives it away:

An interview with Anthropic’s chatbot about sycophantic AI and how to guard against it

This "journalist" dies not understand "AI" stuff at all. There is no singular chatbot, just programs and some context. At best, this... journalist... asked one particular chunk of context. Other contexts are different.

Does her context and program flatter her? Arguably not. The program acts on syntax, not semantics, and has no creativity, no motivation. The program isn't flattering her, the weights generated from scraping the entire internet for text generates flattering language. Humbug.
