I Went to China to See Its Progress on A.I. We Can't Beat It

These "I visited China's [chip fabs/startup scene/phone case factory/Naval forces academy/tourist attraction]" articles don't have a great track record to start with, but this is baffling even by those standards:

> But if a U.S. leader went to China and offered to scrap chip controls in exchange for collaboration on A.I. nonproliferation, there would be at least some chance of the proposal succeeding.

How do you even begin to address such an absentminded suggestion? "Hey America, we know your 4 trillion dollar tech bubble du-jour is great for exports, but can you maybe tone it down a bit until we catch up?" We'll file it next to 'lead balloon' in the cabinet of things that even Donald Trump isn't dumb enough to consider.
