IBM - developed computers for industrial and personal use, this is a first generation tech company. Microsoft - developed the operating system and basic software used by billions, this is also a first generation tech company. Apple - developed novel tech products as well as software to power them, this is a half-step generation(1.5) tech company because of their clear intentions on innovating in both hardware and software. Google - developed the basis of contemporary usage, this is the second generation: modern software designed and iterated for millions, forming massive social and information networks. The following I would all consider to be second generation: Wikipedia, Facebook, Amazon, eBay, YouTube, Netflix. Reddit - developed a site for user submission and curated the content through user feedback as well as user-created communities- this is the quintessential half-step generation(2.5) for considerably changing the dynamics between the user and the software. Valve - developed an ecosystem for gaming, this company is different from the second generation because it created a self-contained market for others to sell their own software. Spotify - developed the de-facto standard for audio streaming, this company is gen 2.5 as opposed to gen 2 like YouTube or Netflix because it created an economic model for established content AND provided access to that content at near-zero cost, thereby utilizing one of the key purposes of the internet, to deliver information, effectively. OpenAI - introduced the modern AI chatbot to the world; most would think to classify this as a third generation tech company, and I would consider it gen 3, however, I will explain what I think would truly make a tech company gen 3. For now, I think OpenAI is a half-step generation company because it is clearly a different beast from the second generation, but not different enough to be third generation.
The defining third generation tech company would truly be a titan, permeating into all aspects of society including government and politics. It would carry economic implications even greater than the current tech giants because of how it will revolutionize social networking. These roads already exist, but this company will pave the highways. It will do what the others couldn't- unequivocally establish access to it to be as important as accessing a utility such as water or electricity. Its codename is Firefly, a light in the darkness of our modern world.
This is what I think gen 3 will look like. That is why I cannot say that the current AI companies are gen 3. Will there be anymore generations afterward? Who knows what in the realm of science fiction today could be reality tomorrow, that is if civilization makes it that far...
