I'm just imagining the mental gymnastics that the religious will have to conjure up to explain how/why god is driving his chosen people from the promised land.

Because in the context of Judaism, the word "chosen" is not meant to imply superiority. Rather, the word chosen is meant to imply being purposed, tasked, or burdened. For example, consider how Frodo was "chosen" to carry the Ring of Power in Lord of the Rings.
