Ask HN: Is software cooked with all the recent malware?

2•fnoef•1h ago
Feels like malware and security vulnerabilities are thriving recently. Are we witnessing a potential collapse of the way software is being developed, or am I just stuck with selection bias and it was always a shit show?

I think we got away with "good times" for a long enough time that we think it was normal. There are people who gain pleasure/rewards/benefits/money from breaking other peoples' things. We now depend on too many other pieces (both large and small) to glue the things we're making together.

It isn't just software, the world is spiraling down the same drain. I don't see it as a fixable situation. The time has come to remove Hanlon's Razor from our lexicon because its opposite is becoming far more true far more often. The Latin phrase cui bono (who benefits?) is what needs to the first question.
