Summary of recent buggy Kindle updates since Nov 2025: dictionary, fonts, manga

1•seam_carver•1h ago
Remember, Amazon can A/B test features, so bugs may only appear if a particular feature is being A/B tested on you.

09/17/2025 5.18.5

* No serious bugs as far as I remember.

11/05/2025: 5.18.6:

* Removed the ability to open a full dictionary in a book, not just a preview. "Open Dictionary" used to be in the spot where "Share on Goodreads" was.

* Removed the dedicated bookmarks bar

* German dictionary bugs * “I've highlighted the \[German\] word dahertrampelten for example. This is a separable verb with prefix daher. Before 5.18.6 my Kindle recognized this and would give me the definition of the entire word. After 5.18.6 it only shows me the definition of the prefix.” * “If someone actually needed to know what dahertrampeln meant, getting told the definition of daher would be [useless]”

* Japanese dictionary bugs * "the dictionary tries to default to looking up the shortest word of the highlighted \[Japanese\] text, instead of the longest.” * If the \[Japanese\] problem was present in English, it would look like: “You try to highlight "lighthouses". It highlights "light" and brings up the definition.”

12/10/2025 5.19.0-5.19.1:

* Kindle Scribe 2025 exclusive firmwares, but future firmwares inherit the problems

* caused battery drain during sleep due to infinite request retries for users using a custom DNS on their router since a certain domain is on a common default blocklist.

2/17/2026 5.19.2+:

* broke embedded fonts in AZW3/KFX books, where certain parts of text have an explicit font specified, often used for titles and headings. Now these are rendered with a generic font. \[fixed in 5.19.4\]

* azw3 books missing page numbers \[fixed in 5.19.3\]

* azw3 books % read tracker broken \[fixed in 5.19.3\]

* azw3 books laggy page turns \[fixed in 5.19.3\]

* azw3 manga/comics % read tracker broken \[partially fixed in 5.19.4\]

* azw3 manga/comics laggy page turns \[partially fixed in 5.19.4\]

* azw3 manga/comics all layout options missing in Aa menu

* added huge margins to mobi/azw3 manga/comics \[fixed in 5.19.3\]

03/27/2026 5.19.3

* Pulled after a few days, includes all changes in 5.19.3.0.1

04/07/2026 5.19.3.0.1:

* excluded Kindle Basic 11th Gen 2022 and Paperwhite 11th Gen so they didn't get any fixes

* Fixed various normal book azw3 issues previously mentioned, missing page numbers, % read tracker, laggy page turns

* Fixed manga margin issue previously mentioned

* azw3 manga/comics now show pages on the wrong side in 2 page landscape mode \[fixed in 5.19.4\]

04/24/2026:

* Kindle Basic 11th Gen 2022 and Paperwhite 11th Gen stuck on 5.19.2 would have azw3 manga margin problem fixed if they connect to wifi, they must have switched the A/B test off for the feature that caused the bug (the new UI)

05/07/2026 5.19.4:

* Pulled after a few days, includes all changes in 5.19.4.0.1

05/21/2026 5.19.4.0.1

* only for Colorsoft, Paperwhite 12th Gen, and Scribe 2022.

* full refresh option no longer does anything for azw3 books, both normal reflowable and manga. This may have been broken in 5.19.3.

* embedded fonts fixed!!!!!!!!!

* fixed azw3 manga landscape order problem

* fixed partially % read tracker for azw3 manga. previously it didn't work at all. now it works, but gets stuck at 100% at the end instead of marking as read. but other percents like 25% and 50% work now.

* azw3 manga page turn speed greatly increased, a tiny bit slower than 5.18.5 but way way faster than 5.19.2

* azw3 manga virtual panels still missing

05/20/2026:

* Amazon ends kindle store downloads via Wifi and registering 1st-5th gen kindles

* Kindle store downloads via USB were ended last year

06/02/2026:

* 5.19.4.0.1 released for Scribe 2025/2024 and Basic 2024

Kindle Basic 2022 11th gen and Paperwhite 5 (11th Gen) users are stuck on 5.19.2

Users can file formal complaints via the Kindle settings > help > contact us > email option.
