The federal government will inflate away anything you try to save. Right now you can beat it via investing... but eventually 10% + inflation year over year will be here unless its wings are permanently clipped. Unfortunately, the people that run it bit the tax base against each other two teams, while they sit back and reap the fruits of the tax payers labor.
