The price of liberty is eternal vigilance

2•KynaraAI•1h ago
About 5 years ago, one of Stephen Colbert guests made a statement that "the price of liberty is eternal vigilance"...It was so impactful that I borrowed it and still remember it to the date. At that time there were so much debate on the actions that the government is allowed to take and the actions that citizens are allowed, and the control on both sides. The statement essentially summarized the struggles of human society since the days of early civilization. As our society is about to see an inflection point, I can't help but apply that statement to the AI Agents:

1. How much freedom are you giving your AI Agents ?

2. What is the governance(control) of those AI Agents ?

3. How often are you governing and adjusting the policies ?

4. And what is the price (cost) of the freedom to AI Agents and the price (cost) of their governance ?

Frank Herbert had one of his characters (Jorge McKie, in Herbert's best book "The Dosadi Experiment") say that "Eternal sloppiness is the price of liberty". George Orwell wrote something similar.

How do we reconcile this view with yours?
