"prototype" seems highly speculative and pejorative. It's 500 years older. It's positively archaic by the time Stonehenge itself is built, it existed for its core purpose which reasonably can be held to be "ritual" (I usually rail against that word but I can't see a henge being used as a site for tanning hides or something)
