Finally a credible source has started reporting on it. There have been some previous discussions about it: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48678789 but that source was behind a paywall and there weren't much credible sources other than unverified twitter rumour as one HN user had put it saying in a comment there.

[Edit: though it does seem like going back to thread re-again it seems that even reuters and Theinformation have reported on it, I wonder who got the news first and was the information leaked or what exactly, again I can't find much non-paywalled information and this bloomberg is paywalled as well :-(( ]

Sam Altman communicated it to the company. Somebody (or even the PR dept) leaked it to the press.

I wonder what could've happened if it wouldn't have been leaked to the press and for how long they are sitting on this information in general, so many questions arises from this

How was it leaked to the press and to which press exactly if I may ask, I suppose the Somebody person (or even the PR dept?) that you mention must be Anonymous right?

And what was the overall plan of OpenAI/Sama if it wasn't leaked, to continue on with discussions with the govt. behind closed doors? Could that be a reason why Sama and dario (iirc) around the same time, stopped fear-mongering about job-losses because previously they were both "fearmaxxing" everybody about job-security and other factors like the economy and asking for regulation.

I wonder how internally the company is feeling... Also if two companies are being asked (OAI/Anthropic) then I guess Google must be informed as well and so can we anticipate a leak from Google coming forward as well?

In most companies above 1000 employees it's assumed that any email/communication with most of the employees is as if you sent that communication to the NY Times at the same time.

You are looking for a conspiracy where there is none. For all practical purposes telling something to most of your employees is telling it to the world.

Which is why in most public companies, first you send the press release (to the news outlets, investors), and only AFTER you tell the employees.

Sam Altman deciding to tell it to the employees is the same as him deciding to tell it to the whole world, and he was well aware.

It was already rumored that Google is delaying releasing Gemini 3.5 Pro, supposedly because its not as good as they wanted. But maybe its because of Mythos level security capabilities.

So now they can say stopping mythos+fable wasn't politically motivated. I wonder where this will go. Hopefully there's some concrete legislation for regulation of powerful AI enacted soon.

Ask HN: How did you set up a multi-agent orchestration for personal use?
