> "To keep the trend honest we computed it on a fixed panel of 594 companies that appear in our data every year, 385k reports in total, so the decline you see is the same companies getting stingier."

Isn't there a selection bias here? The average tech company that has stayed in business since 2015 presumably grew quite a bit and can now be choosier.

also a publisher bias - they want you to pay them for their interview prep
racketracer•31m ago
Most big tech companies like Google, Meta, Amazon comprise like 80 to 90% of all the tech jobs so it's still representative of the big names that I think everyone knows
functionmouse•37m ago
39% seems like a lot
hn_throwaway_99•32m ago
The article talks about how larger, well-known companies are pickier. Google was at 21% the whole time, Microsoft at mid 30s. This sounds right to me (note these are not just engineering roles).
_cs2017_•35m ago
Source is unclear. Self-reported by candidates? Huge bias then, since people may or may not want to say whether they got / didn't get an offer, and whether they accepted / rejected an offer, and this split may vary by company and by year very significantly.
racketracer•22m ago
Why would it change by year? I get it could happen by company if some companies are much more secretive than others but not sure why it would change year over year.
