Open Source is not a business model (2016)

Interesting to see this pop up again, as I agree with the post but not the bait-and-switch in the title :-P

Open source is not a business model in and of itself, but many very successful companies and large enterprise units are built off open source foundations and the aggressive adoption that that garnered. I'd always urge the framing to shift towards something like; 'open source is rarely the only thing to do, but it's worth doing widely for many commercial reasons'. (in)Famously IBM's revenue from open source services was $2Bn in 2003 before they stopped separately reporting it.

How did IBM do that?

Do you want to expand or add to the points the author made in his article on how to make money from Open Source?

Article author here, thanks for sharing!

I mainly wrote this as a reflection on many accounts of OSS maintainers burning out.

Much has changed since 2016, but I believe the point still stands. The arrival of AI based coding (and Pull Request floods), and the tendency of many VC backed startups to "open source" their components has made the picture more complicated.

Last year I wrote a sort of a followup, geared towards founders and businesses, on how to use open source as a part of you business strategy: https://senkorasic.com/articles/open-source-strategy
