I was paying for three subscriptions that didn't know about each other: a task manager, a CRM, and a canvas tool. Every year the price went up and something I used moved behind a higher tier. And none of it was on my machine, so if any of those companies changed their mind, my work went with them.

That's the whole reason for it. One system instead of three, files on your own disk that open in a text editor, bought once rather than rented. If we disappear tomorrow it carries on working, because there's nothing for us to switch off.
