Effectively the same thing that happened to the US: a coordinated right-wing project executed over the past fifty years or so, enabled by a society that looked at the aftermath of World War II and concluded that leftist politics are dangerous.

The US has great universities. Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Caltech, Yale, Berkley...

But they elected a President that decided to defund them.
