I get either a dns error if accessed as is (I am based in EU) or an infinite captcha loop if accessed via a vpn. Any pointers how to make it work?

Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 DNS blocks archive.today, are you using that?

If your provider is DNS blocking it, you could do a DNS lookup from somewhere else and put it in your hosts file.
