We built a place for photography communities.

Something that surprised us while working on this: it's harder than it should be to find a good home for one online.

Reddit is strong for discussion, and photography there gets treated like any other post. Discord is great for conversation in the moment, and it gets awkward once you want to browse or share a large amount of visual work. In both cases the community is structured around text, and the photos live inside that.

We wanted the photos to be the structure.

So we built an app where anyone can create a community around a photography niche, customize it, set their own rules, and invite people with a shareable link. Communities are organized around albums for now. You can make something broad like street photography, or narrow like 35mm shot in Paris, and let it grow from there.

Members post as many photos as they want, explore other niches, and find people shooting the same things they are. There's a camera and editor built in too, with effects written in Metal running on the GPU in real time, and filters you can export as recipes and share with others.

We're leaving most of the structure to the people creating the communities rather than deciding up front what a photography community should look like.

If you're part of one today, on Reddit, Discord, Facebook groups, Flickr, anywhere: what do you find frustrating about it?

I click on that link and it says "An Error Occurred", that's frustrating!
