In the story, some kind of deep future researcher finds an intelligence stored in a vast archive and plugs it into a humanoid terminal to hear its story. The intelligence was originally a human which was trained to mentally control multiple points of awareness simultaneously. They have their consciousness transitioned (or copied) to silicon and are used for various purposes, including controlling production lines at a factory. Eventually, they start to be used to control fleets of military spacecraft. For whatever reason, the intelligence is decommissioned and stored away to be found much later by the entity at the beginning of the story.
Hoping this rings a bell for someone, it was a great story that I'd like to share with a friend.

Kind of stupid, but I decided to make one final search through my huge bookmark list after posting and just came across the story. The bookmark was to a list, not the story itself, and I missed it in the first couple passes.
