Really no choice here. Germany is under immense competitive pressure from China and with the US protecting its domestic industries more than it has in the past too. This could wind up something akin to 2008-2010 Detroit/hollowing out of American manufacturing as a new, massive competitor making better products at cheaper prices upends the status quo.

This will be destabilizing to Germany and the EU and the response will be increasing protective measures (tariffs like Trump against China) and more.
