Rock and a hard place, We need to expand renewable's fast enough to reduce our demand for fossil fuels but we still have that demand while it is on-going (and we'll still have some demand even when we've built out the renewable's unless we also build out a vast network of grid level storage or go nuclear).
This isn't a "we'll just weather this winter and carry on as before" this is a "The whole of Europe needs to figure out what they are going to do to secure the next 30 years of energy usage and then just do it".
We are so far past the point of pretending things are going back to the post-ww2/post-cold war status quo's.
