Ask HN: About map enshittification: Have you noticed the maps have gotten worse?

2•kunle•50m ago
For a long time I was on google maps, and a couple of years ago switched to apple maps because I _felt_ it was better where I lived.

But recently apple maps has gotten worse. Then I switched to waze, and it felt fine for a while and now feels like that has gotten worse.

A lot of it is feeling, but there are a few discrete examples of how

1. I can no longer trust that the fastest route is suggested: sometimes it defualts to a slower route, and other times it tells me the route is fastest, but when I click into a "slower" route (one that is intuitively faster to me because I know the area) the estimated driving distance is literally faster (sometimes by multiple minutes for a drive that might be only 30 - 40 minutes. Why didn't it default to this one???

2. Worse routes: the one I most consistently notice is there's a route near me where you can either make a left turn in one of two ways: a) at a stop light or b) by turning left into traffic on a pretty major throughway. Up until ~3 months ago no map had ever suggested crossing the throughway, and all of a sudden, every map started suggesting it (google/apple/waze and uber and lyft drivers).

Has anyone else noticed this? Is this just garden variety enshittification?
