I believe the post only focuses on the simplicity of the hardware, the registers and fails to discuss the problems juggling variables in and out from zero page or other storage because of the very very limited register file. I remember as a kid learning on a C64, sure the instruction was really really simple, but juggling was not. I required a lot of thought around the constraints of moving values in and out etc.
