Can people please suggest a good tutorial (or even book) on building a simple Desktop Windowing System, preferably coded in a high level language such as C with small pieces of assembly where necessary.

The sort of thing I have in mind is something like GEM or the early MS Windows, which runs on top of an existing shell.
