I only know what I see in reporting, but if they are protesting poor conditions in the schools and budget cuts for education, then why are they literally burning the school buildings? That seems terribly counterproductive.

You need to be specific. Who is "they"? Everyone involved in the protests or a specific group of people? I'm going to guess it is a minority group that is exploiting the situation among those that actually care about the cause.
