Nearly all 19 car brands send driver data to third parties (Northeastern/CR)

Disclosure: I'm the founder of AuraVision, which publishes The Signal (the linked site). Posting because the underlying Northeastern/Consumer Reports study is a significant privacy issue worth a technical discussion here. The site has a product point of view, but the reporting and primary sources stand on their own — happy to link the raw sources or dig into specifics in the thread.

The problem with vibecoded sites like this is nobody will take you or your idea seriously. It’s like a big rubber stamp that says “this is slop”. Hire an actual designer and make an actual website, you could still do this with AI to build it, but it will look 1000x more credible.
plc•25m ago
i mean, I really want to give parity credit to AI when it's due. We have lots of designers, and honestly, the work is not at parity at what we're seeing internally. People can disagree but that is just my personal experience. Thanks for the feedback though, I do appreciate it. If we have to make it more credible with different colors or fonts I don't really see that as an issue but we'll take a look.
VladVladikoff•42m ago
If you buy a new car from the dealer presumably somewhere in the fine print it gives them permission to do this. But if you buy the same car used from an individual, how does the car company still retain the right to spy? It seems like this must be breaking some sort of privacy laws.
plc•30m ago
yeah exactly, this is totally ungoverned territory and has to be discussed a lot, a lot more...
m463•29m ago
Usually this stuff is covered in the owner's manual.

When you reset the car you might also have to agree on the main nav.

but yeah, doesn't always cover every drive.

I remember on old nissan leaf, you had to agree to telematics every drive.

rubyn00bie•41m ago
This feels like a marketing post. There’s no substance to it and no details, at least for me on mobile. I really don’t understand who or what this is supposed to be for… if Auravision is a product I can’t tell what it is or why it matters.
plc•28m ago
it's just a HN for this particular vertical of AI privacy and security...thanks for the patience, it's our first run at this. no marketing is intended, it's just a (hopefully useful) website to try out some techniques.
rubyn00bie•17m ago
But does it do anything? The only thing I could do was share a link the content was light and nothing else seemed interactive. I’m not sure why this would be for HN since it doesn’t appear to have any real content or information.
modeless•41m ago
This is a vibe coded advertisement.
mikeocool•39m ago
This link seems to be re-packaging news stories as an ad for whatever auravision is.

The actual sources for this (that actually list the 19 car brands) are: https://news.northeastern.edu/2026/09/29/connected-car-priva...

https://www.consumerreports.org/electronics/personal-informa...

sandworm101•39m ago
Is it really brand-based?

I was looking into a new Honda and discovered the data sharing varied most between models rather than between brands. Some honda's reported much more than others. This seemed to turn on which infotainment system they were using and if the car came with non-optional remote start (cell).

AdamH12113•37m ago
This page is an ad with minimal substance. Better links would be the Northeastern article:

https://news.northeastern.edu/2026/09/29/connected-car-priva...

or the study itself:

https://automatictransmission.khoury.northeastern.edu/paper....

plc•35m ago
yeah apologies, it's not meant to be repackaging but a 24/7 news analysis to compact relatively recent cyber related incidents to an HN style update, automate by our AI. This is the first run on this, so I appreciate the patience.
plc•33m ago
i get the vibe coding angst but I do think this is different, I mean there are 14 agents scouring real time sources 24/7 to put together condensed, readable content for the average user to make them more alarmed (as they should be) about AI privacy. That's the only goal, just education, if it works. If not, we'll shut it down.
mikeocool•17m ago
I think you'll find most people on hacker news don't want to read re-packaged content, they want to read primary sources or original reporting.
metalman•22m ago
I HATE, loath and despise, my 'smart' car. Every time I aproach the cursed thing I ritualy anounce 'i hate my car', as it helps get that up front and reduces my surprise when it displays some further subtle and horrible behavior or characteristic. So far I can not find any recomendation for a new car that has no screen or capacitive controlls or the least of my concerns, connectivity. And it's far far from just the technology, the whole thing is a norman door on wheels, but it looks like I willhave the financial wearwithal and time to dispose of it and aquire something unfortunately older, but presumably all thought out as one cohearant thing.
plc•18m ago
yeah sadly being in this industry for too long I more and more just want to get a log cabin with no internet access...i can't stand the constant ring devices around me, hoping that hackers aren't watching me while I sleep and knowing the firmware is hopelessly outdated and that Opus 5 or whatever has already found 300 vulns (they already hacked 85% of classified DOD systems in all of FIVE HOURS) Geez, taxpayer money well spent to harden our secrets...
