I'm a sound editor and composer. I had an MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) keyboard sitting on the desk in front of me and not enough space for a DAW control surface. The MPE keys to me were about the same size as a mixing board fader, and operated on the same y-axis gesture, so I decided to see if I could make the translation.
About a year later, I have an 8-channel control surface running on HUI or Mackie Control with all major functions, including a system wide keyboard shortcut and macro engine.
The crucial part was getting the keys to respond like a real fader, starting in the right position when touched and not introducing jumps or jitters into the mix. The result is really smooth control though, and it works better than I originally imagined it would.
It's macOS only for now, and works with ROLI Seaboard models and KMI K-board Pro. It should also work with Haken Continuum, but is not tested.
DAWs tested and confirmed: Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Cubase, Studio One, Reaper, Ableton Live and Digital Performer, plus video editors using the same protocols, such as DaVinci Resolve's Fairlight page.
I would love any feedback, especially if you own any of these devices and can try it out. There's a free trial. Thanks!
