I have been collecting my photos and videos since 2000s. My collection grew exponentially when I bought iPhone 3GS back in 2010. I had roughly 1TB of backups in multiple iPhoto folders. It was nice at the beginning but than I realized that there are multiple copies of files in multiple backups. It's not just one or two, they were like thousands because I copied them here and there time to time from drive to external drive and import from iCloud etc.
So There was a big chunk of unnecessary data sitting in my external drive. I tried iPhoto itself to resolve it but it wasn't good enough. So I decided to write small app (dedupe) to eliminate them by myself. The story of `videre` started like that. There is a longer story in videre.sh/blog if you would like to read.
`videre` is local & privacy first CLI tool. You can do many things with it such as duplicate elimination, date/time fix with EXIF/mtime support, recognise/cluster faces automatically, date grouping, event detection, map, advanced search via composable filters and lucene syntax, import/export Google/Apple/Adobe, XMP support, tags/keywords etc. Other media libraries have similar features but the difference of `videre` is CLI. Since it runs in terminal it's very convenient to use it via AI Assistant. So you don't even have to know all those commands and their usages. You may ask to you AI assistant: "Find my photos with George in NY at last summer by using videre" and that should be enough (of course you need to define who is George via `videre gallery` People section first).
I enjoy using it. It's not because I built, it's a strong tool and you can do many things. Especially it's gallery command and web UI is strongly recommended. I bet all of you need such tool at some point so just give it a shot. Installation is very easy and then scan some files and see `videre gallery` UI/UX. Hope you enjoy it.
