I wanted to see how Oakland California compares to the rest of the region. I knew the rates were high, but I wanted to quantify how high. Especially since the cost of proper trash disposal contributes substantially to Oakland's illegal dumping problem.
I found some interesting insights between wealthiest cities on the peninsula and Oakland, because a city like Atherton actually pays substantially less than Oakland for 20 gallon trash service. I would have expected the operational expenditure related to service delivery to be lower in Oakland, so rates would be lower.
Also, trash hauling has some well-publicized cases of corruption (including the current federal indictment aginst former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao involving waste collection executives).
I think the transparency provided by a webpage like this can only be a good thing.
