Lots of people were discussing the lack of precise train location control in the recent thread about the train crash in Spain. The ETCS Level 2 uses GPS and GSM in order to know the precise location, speed and direction of trains. Unfortunately it is not so wide spread, probably due to costs (both the infrastructure and the vehicle need changes)
