I wanted to tell a little bit about ReadyTab. At first it was just an html file that I maintained myself at work, (Software engineer) as my bookmarking skills are passable, but not glorious. As we work with multiple environments for each client (dev, stage, pre-prod, prod) and have for each client/project also the usual kanban, jira, confluence artillery this was already a great help. But after about 8-10 months the html file itself became a pain to edit and some things didn't sit right with me. That's when I made an extension out of it. First versions were handcoded (in a very hasty afternoon and the following morning), a bit more than a year ago, now I plan more with AI and put more structure in it.
I'm fully aware that there are other new tab extensions and it's just one of many. It's the new tab extension opinionated in my own way. My goal was to regroup all I need for a project to be in my new tab. (Not only links, but also documents, folders, scripts etc...). For that I created an additional companion app (uses native messaging and powershell / bash ), that allows me to open folders/files/scripts (and therefore applications) from my new tab. It's something that I have been missing from many new tab extensions. It's simply a click less. There are some cool sharing options for the pro version, but I think those are more for people having to share a lot of links/teams and that the free version is pretty complete without any pro subscription. (Launchers on subscribed shared boards ask for confirmation before running.)
Some months ago I published it on the chrome web store and on firefox web store. I put a lot of time in small features to make my life easier (duplicating a link, copying a group into another workspace, adding a link from contextmenu etc...).
This extension asks for a lot of permissions. The most controversial is probably the "Read and change all your data on all websites". It has been a deliberate choice, I have made this tool to be the most useful to me. The "Read and change all your data on all websites" for example simply allows me to have my spotlight search to be injected through the content script. It doesn't read anything of what users have opened and sends nothing to any server. (Server sync (encrypted) is optional and only with Pro sync).
So this has basically been my (and some coworkers') solution to handling the links/docs for a lot of projects (and sometimes we share a board for a presentation etc..). Some things I didn't implement, as I simply don't see the use for it (again, my preference): Weather gadget, Pomodoro ticker, focus mode etc...
