Twelve-month all-cause mortality after initial Covid-19 vaccination

Conclusion

Florida adults who received the BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccine in the initial series had higher risk of 12-month all-cause, cardiovascular, COVID-19, and non-COVID-19 mortality compared to matched mRNA-1273 recipients, with differences in cardiovascular and COVID-19 mortality primarily driven by adults 60 and older. These findings suggest that COVID-19- and non-COVID-19-related health outcomes should be considered when evaluating vaccines targeting SARS-CoV-2.

So this is strictly one vaccine (Pfizer) vs another vaccine (Moderna) on health outcomes, not a yes/no question of "are vaccines safe", and Pfizer is associated with more negative health outcomes than the Moderna vaccine.

One thing that's amazing to me if you step back and think about studies on all cause mortality is how, despite not having the faintest idea what mechanism or associated probabilities are driving the outcomes, we can still know that some things have to do with other things in mysterious ways that have to do with deep probabilities that nature is constantly testing. Same thing happened with multivitamin research. We just knew that you're more likely to die of something if you regularly take one, (though I suspect there are good hunches now about why).

Which I know sounds obvious, but it's like if people with blue shoes lived longer than people with red shoes, but only for red shoe wearers in Seattle. We could go 30 years having no clue why *and* nevertheless knowing it. Not because it's magic but because there's something deep and inscrutable that it's possible to know. Which sounds frivolous until it's the characteristic feeling about certain questions impacting life and death.
