(This article actually has some good illustrations, unlike many pop archaeology articles)

I was pretty amazed by these. To my eyes, only the subject makes them look like ancient tattoos rather than something modern. At an intellectual level, I know that in many ways people in the different past were not that different to people of today (in intelligence and some of their basic feelings and desires, for example) but this still surprised me greatly.
