Huawei's Perfect Timing: New AI Chip Launches as Nvidia Exits

Huawei plans to ship its new AI chip to Chinese customers next month, right when US export controls are pushing Nvidia out of the market. The timing works perfectly for Chinese tech firms hunting for alternatives to Nvidia's processors.

This is a rather nice demonstration of the double-edged nature of sanctions IMO. Another example is Russia reviving its passenger aircraft manufacturing, including wrapping up the development and certification of modern, fuel efficient engines. And then, after the market saturates in a few years, China will start selling future versions of those accelerators to whoever wants them, for much cheaper than NVIDIA's cost.
inverted_flag•9mo ago
> The story shows how export controls can backfire. By pushing Nvidia out, Washington may have accidentally helped China build its own AI chip industry faster than anyone expected.

The US keeps doing this and failing to learn from it.
