Ask HN: Known ways app telemetry is abused?

2•gtirloni•9mo ago
Telemetry is often justified by product teams as a way to learn how users are interacting with an app or service.

Besides the obvious potential for abuse by law enforcement, what other ways can telemetry be abused? Bonus point if you directly witnessed this in your company.

Unintentional disclosure of sensitive data can pose risks to privacy and increase the likelihood of data exfiltration. Storing and handling the telemetry data insecurely also poses a risk if breached. Employees abusing access, I recall Uber and Tesla having this problem.
