I built COGext to fill the gap left by the original System Monitor Chrome Web App (by François Beaufort), which is no longer functional now that Chrome Apps have been deprecated. I wanted a modern, extension-based replacement that remains lightweight and transparent.
Technical approach:
Clean Vanilla JS: a lightweight and robust VMC architecture.
Privacy: Zero tracking, zero record.
Lightweight: The whole package is under 550KB.
Open Source: Fully auditable.
It provides real-time monitoring for CPU (usage/temp), RAM, Storage, Battery level and more. I’ve focused on accessibility and a clean, internationalized (i18n) UI.
I'm a veteran developer (started in the late 80s) and I still believe the web is at its best when it's minimalist and user-centric. I’d love to get your feedback on the implementation or any features you'd find useful for a dev workflow.
